The demand for smarter, more efficient energy management has increased significantly in recent years. As utility companies transition to digital systems, there is a growing need for smart meters that can provide accurate real-time data while offering ease of use and scalability. One such OEM energy meter manufacturing company sought to enhance its metering portfolio by integrating smart meters capable of handling various meter types and communication protocols. Their goal was to have a streamlined solution that would give them an edge by having their own customized control software. Which can be shared with utility companies to manage/configure their DLSM/COSEM based smart energy meters. We also created solution for integrating their production facility to calibrate, accuracy test and sampling test on various semi-automatic/fully automatic test benches and ERP system. During production of smart meter, they also need support to have some more software modules for testing on test jigs, RTC Calibration and laser printing of dynamic data on mete face plate.
Overview
Challenge
The company faced several key challenges that needed to be addressed:
- Data Integrity and Accuracy: Existing metering systems had limitations in terms of data accuracy and communication between the meter and central systems.
- Scalability: The solution needed to support various meter types, communication protocols, and future upgrades.
- User Experience: The system needed to provide an intuitive interface to simplify the monitoring and management of meter readings for end-users.
- Integration with External Tools: Integration with third-party systems and tools was necessary to ensure smooth operations across the entire ecosystem.
- Meter Calibration: Accurate meter calibration was required to ensure precise readings for billing and regulatory purposes.
Solution
The company developed an advanced Smart Meter Solution by creating custom control software for the meters and integrating several key features to address the challenges outlined above.
Key Features and Implementation:
- DLMS/COSEM Protocol for Data Exchange:
- The integration of DLMS/COSEM protocol was a cornerstone of the solution. This industry-standard protocol enabled the smooth and secure exchange of data between meters and central systems. It allowed the configuration of meter parameters and facilitated bidirectional communication.
- Intuitive User Interface for Meter Management:
- One of the major challenges faced by utility companies was simplifying the interaction with smart meters for customers. The company designed and developed intuitive user interfaces that made it easier for end-users to access and manage their meter readings. The user-friendly design helped customers gain better control over their energy consumption and provided insights into usage trends.
- Access Control and Role Management:
- Access control was implemented based on meter profiles to ensure that only authorized personnel could access specific meters or manage certain tasks. The system incorporated role-based access management to enable the organization to restrict access based on user responsibilities and permissions, adding an extra layer of security and control.
- Integration with Test Benches for Calibration and Accuracy Testing:
- To ensure that each smart meter met the required calibration standards and operated accurately, the company integrated the solution with various test benches such as TB41 (by Calmet) and AsTel (by Metertest Company). These benches allowed for meter calibration and accuracy tests during production, ensuring that the meters provided precise readings once deployed. This helped reduce errors and enhanced the reliability of the smart meters.
- Test Jig Integration and RTC Calibration:
- The system also incorporated test jig integration for testing the meter is tamper-resistant. Also developed RTC (Real-Time Clock) calibration to ensure that the meters’ internal clocks are not deviated. Which is critical for maintaining accurate time-stamped data on energy usage.
- Integration with 3rd Party Laser Printers for Dynamic Data Printing:
- To provide users with a clear, legible display of their meter name plate, the solution was integrated with a 3rd-party laser printer. This printer dynamically prints meter data on the meter face plate.
- Library Development for DLMS/COSEM Parameter Access:
- We developed a specialized library to access and manage DLMS/COSEM parameters via DLL (Dynamic-Link Library). This library simplified the process of retrieving and analyzing meter data from their own software, ensuring that OEM and utility companies can quickly access essential information and make informed decisions.
